The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival brings the best documentaries from around the world along with their filmmakers to Northern California. Twice named “One of the Coolest Film Festivals” by MovieMaker Magazine, it is one of the important and special stops on the documentary festival circuit. Furthermore, Sebastopol is a documentary destination that has filmmakers raving about the hospitality, quality of programming, and wonderful community atmosphere that this festival fosters.

We screen short and feature length documentaries, hybrid docs, and any other type of film that can be described as documentary. We present awards in both short and feature categories: Jury and Audience Awards. Additional awards may be announced.

SDFF 2019 screened 68 films in 4 days with over 70 filmmakers in attendance. SDFF 2020 had an amazing line-up of 72 films, but following the outbreak of COVID-19, was first postponed, then pared down and continued online as Docs Make House Calls. We also found out that we had been approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy Qualifying Festival for the Documentary Short Subject category. We are so thrilled to be able to have this opportunity to help our filmmakers gain recognition!

For 2021, we are, once again, optimistic and planning a live, in-person festival, now armed with far greater knowledge and experience using a variety of digital platforms to amplify and extend our live festival. Submissions have just opened, and we look forward to seeing what brilliant films come our way!
