2022 Submissions Begin July 2021
The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival brings the best documentaries from around the world along with their filmmakers to Northern California. Twice named “One of the Coolest Film Festivals” by MovieMaker Magazine, it is one of the important and special stops on the documentary festival circuit. Furthermore, Sebastopol is a documentary destination that has filmmakers raving about the hospitality, quality of programming, and wonderful community atmosphere that this festival fosters.
We screen short and feature length documentaries, hybrid docs, and any other type of film that can be described as documentary. We present awards in both short and feature categories: Jury and Audience Awards. Additional awards may be announced.
In a typical year, the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival exhibits 70-75 films on six screens simultaneously at Sebastopol Center for the Arts and Rialto Cinemas Sebastopol® to a combined audience of 5,500 -6,000 documentary film lovers, industry guests, and fellow filmmakers from around the world. SDFF’s last live fest in 2019 screened 68 films in 4 days with over 70 filmmakers in attendance. SDFF 2020 had an amazing line-up of 72 films, but following the outbreak of COVID-19, was first postponed, then pared down and continued online as Docs Make House Calls. In brighter news, we also found out that we had been approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy Awards® Qualifying Festival for the Documentary Short Subject category. We are so thrilled to be able to have this opportunity to help our filmmakers gain recognition!
Although we were optimistic and planned a live, in-person festival for 2021, safety concerns have dictated we remain virtual until 2022. SDFF 2022 will be an in-person festival held in late March in Sebastopol. While we are looking forward to having an in-person festival next year, we are also confident that SDFF 2021 will be a unique event that retains the values and goals of our live festivals. We also believe that the knowledge and experience we have gained using a variety of digital platforms will only help amplify and extend our live festival. Submissions for 2022 will open in June, and we look forward to seeing what brilliant films come our way!
